Making it Sustainably
To achieve goal of becoming a net-zero artist, I am redefining material selection process, prioritising alternatives to traditional art materials. I am developing a roadmap to be able to implement and share with the creative community. My aim is to have this in place by 2030.
So far I have devised a 5-step sustainability process as a concept to work towards within my art practice.
Step 1: Sustainable Design Planning
Lifecycle Analysis – Evaluating the carbon footprint of materials.
Material Sourcing – Selecting natural, ethically sourced materials.
Waste Reduction Strategy – Ensuring minimal material waste during the creative process.
Step 2: Low-Impact Production Methods
Contemporary Materials – Avoiding synthetic and petroleum-based materials.
Handcrafted & Energy-Efficient Techniques – Reducing reliance on machinery using fossil fuel.
Low-Waste Studio Practices – Re-using materials in new projects.
Step 3: Sustainable Packaging & Delivery
Plastic-Free Packaging – Using recycled cardboard, biodegradable wraps, and compostable materials.
Carbon-Neutral Shipping – Partnering with eco-friendly couriers to offset delivery emissions.
Local Sourcing Prioritisation – Working with nearby suppliers to reduce transportation emissions.
Step 4: Art Installation
Eco-Friendly Mounting Options – Eg. Ensuring all fixtures are reusable or biodegradable.
Buy-Back & Resale Options – Offering businesses a resale or trade-in program to extend the artwork’s lifecycle.
Step 5: End-of-Life Strategy & Circular Economy
Carbon Footprint Reports – Providing corporate clients with detailed impact reports for ESG compliance.
Reinvestment in Sustainability – Supporting environmental restoration projects for every artwork installed.
